Name of your website?

Ottawa Abstract Artist, Catherine Gutsche, mixed media painter

Your name?

Catherine Gutsche

Your Location (city, etc)

Ottawa

Please give us a short summary of your website?

My website is my portfolio of all of my mixed media and acrylic paintings. As well I display my sold work, let people view my experimental work and the paintings that I have done to support charities.

What inspired you to launch your own website?

My medium is visual so the web was the ideal place for me to show my paintings to buyers, gallery owners and people interested in ordering commission work.

When did you launch your first website, and what was it?

My very first site was a personal website launched about 10 years ago when I first moved to Ottawa. It was my learning site.

How did you decide on a name for your website?

I named my website so that search engines would find my site and so that people searching for artists knew what to expect when they clicked.

What makes it different from other, similar offerings?

In comparison to many artist websites I think mine is well designed and very easy to navigate. Unfortunately many artists can paint wicked paintings but their eye for graphic design and presentation is saddly missing.

What is your eventual goal?

My goal is to inform my art community of my shows, art exhibitions and my available paintings.

How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?

I spend alot of time on my site. I haven't sold alot of paintings as a result of the site BUT I have sold my web design skills to other artists who want sites to show off their artist portfolios.

If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?

Perhaps I would add an ecommerce aspect to the site.

If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?

I'm up for the challenge!

What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?

None to speak of.

What has been your biggest challenge?

My biggest challenge is to get the best photography to present my work in a spectacular fashion.

What method has been most successful for promoting your website?

Word of mouth locally has been a great help. but I also try to make contributions to other websites where I can get the opportunity to mention my URL.

How has running your website differed from your expectations?

It really hasn't differed. I knew what I was getting into.

How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?

I started this site about 4 years ago and I plan to keep my site forever.

What is the biggest advantage of an artist owning a site?

For me I have been able to upload high resolution images to my site so that when I send out press releases to announce a new show I can instantly direct the media to a URL for downloading an excellent image to go with their news article. The media really appreciate this.
