Nathan Payne Art Interview

By Interviewer at 03/12/09 14:05

Name of your website?

Nathan Payne Art

Your name? Illinois, ceramics: Terra Cotta Bird House

Nathan Payne

Your Location (city, etc)

hartford

Please give us a short summary of your website?

My website contains examples of my stoneware functional pottery and terra cotta birdhouses. It also currently has examples of my pinhole photography and will in the near future contain examples of my other artwork like paintings. Lastly it has a link to my store on Etsy.com

What inspired you to launch your own website?

Since I am a full time artist I decided I needed to use all the rescources available to promote myself and sell my work.

When did you launch your first website, and what was it?

My first website was launched about two years ago. It was nathanpayneceramics.com. It was a very similar site.

How did you decide on a name for your website?

I considered giving it a name as if it were a company but decided that naming it after myself made it more personal. It makes it more real.

What makes your website different from other, similar offerings?

Like all art my work is unique to me. I do believe that the variety of materials I use makes me a more rounded artist than others.

What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)

To sell my work and promote myself.

How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?

So far it is hard to tell this current site has only been established for about a month.

If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?

I would hire someone to help develope the site to be an E-commerce so I wouldn'y have to go through a middle man to sell my work.

If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?

I may have to quit my day job as a production potter but I could manage quit a bit of demand with my experience doing production.

What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?

None so far but it is still early.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Finding time to make and manage the website, work, and make my work.

What method has been most successful for promoting your website?

Advertising offered through Etsy.

How has running your website differed from your expectations?

So far I have had more traffic than expected. So I hope it continues to differ from my expectations.

How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?

It has been up for about a month. I will keep it running indefinately if it is helping me achieve my goals.

How did you get started in ceramics?

I took a class at a community college and fell in love with the material and proccess. After that I was hooked. I ended up transfering to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville where I got my Bachelors of Fine Arts. At SIUE is where I learned about other materials and took classes in drawing, painting, sculpture, and others. This is where I became an artist.

What is your website address?
