What is the name of your Blog?

Hewn & Hammered

What is your name?

Moe Hong

Where are you from? (include country, state and/or city)

California USA

What is your current age or age range?

37

Please describe your blog

It's about the Arts & Crafts Movement - specifically in the US & Europe - which was the foremost architecture / design movement from 1905 to about 1930, and spawned the Mission Revival & Prairie styles.

Describe the main purpose of your blogging, what are you trying to accomplish?

Raise awareness about America's architectural heritage.

What blogging platform do you do and why?

Typepad. They handle all the server side stuff and I can just concentrate on design and content.

What do you blog the most about?

see above

What kind of blogs make you angry?

Right wing hate speech. I don't want to restrict their right to say what they want, but there's so much vitriol aimed at women, gays, minorities. It's really sad.

Give five of your best blogging tips.

Write regularly. Don't recycle your own content. Be original. Have a sense of humor. Constantly ask your readers what they want, and give it to them.

What are some things you would NEVER blog about?

politics. my personal life. sex / relationships. drugs.

Did you start blogging for the purpose of making money and if so, are you making enough money?

Partly. I'm very happy with the revenue I am making.

How long have you been blogging?

over 3 years now.

About how many hours per day do you spend blogging?

maybe 4 or 5

Do you track RSS feeds and if so, how many do you usually track daily?

Yes. Close to 600 unique readers. I use feedburner to track & manage my feeds.

Do you use Digg, and why or why not?

Not really. Too tech-oriented; all young males. Not my audience.

Do you use Stumbleupon, and why or why not?

Tried it, but it seems underused compared to other similar services (delicious etc)

What promotional techniques work best for you and why?

Magazine ads, mentions in newspaper stories, links from bigger blogs & newspaper sites.

If you could post a blog on any blog in the world, which one would it be and why?

i don't understand the question. post a blog on any blog? huh?

What mistakes have you made that you could warn others about?

don't take time off. schedule posts in advance if you are going on vacation.

What are your top five blogging site picks and why?

boingboing.net metafilter.com lifehacker.com typographica.org

sorry, that's only four, but that's what i read. good, original content, sense of humor, interesting & useful stuff.

dozens of people
