Creating the Main Structure of Your Miniature House

08/24/09 08:47

In the previous post, I've made a brief article about miniature doll houses and how you can purchase furnitures and parts of the home from your local crafts store. But if buying the parts of the store is not your type of thing, meaning you would rather make the house and the furnitures on your own, then there's nobody stopping you from doing so!

First step is planning down everything on paper. Personally, I'm not fond of doing everything on a whim especially if it's a design-oriented project like this one. Maybe for furnitures being spontaneous is already good enough. For the structure of your home, though, that is not available. You don't want to remove an entire wall when you've already glued it right?

For the walls of your home, there are a lot of materials that you can use, but the most advisable would probably be either cardboard or illustration board. This is because they can be easily cut down to your desired sizes and covered with the necessary decorations, unless, of course, if you planned to make a wooden home in the first place. You can then either paint the walls or cover it with fabric to serve as your house's wallpaper.

Also take note that you will have to put in doors and windows. Their placement should be planned carefully and should be put in accordance to the overall design of your home. To do this, use a felt tip pen to mark the places to be cut, and cut gently with a cutter. You may opt to leave one side of a door ontouched, so that there will be some sort of hinge mechanish to support the door.

From here on, be as creative as you can be in designing your furnitures. There really are no guidelines for this, though a general rule is to match their style with the rest of your home. Just enjoy decorating and have fun with your miniature home!
