Paper mache, I think, is one the the most enjoyable art activities that once can do when it comes to the paper arts. For some reason, I feel that dipping a handful of tissue papers in transparent glue, the messy feel of it and all, is enough to make anyone want to repeat it so badly. Some people just want to make up a lot of mess.
What's even better is that it is so easy to do that even kids may be able to do it. All you have to do is to give them initial instructions and that's it. They're already ready to go. They may even want to experiment with how it is done. There are no right and wrong instructions when it comes to this craft. With the techniques derived from this hobby, one can make a lot of artworks.
I think that the most difficult phase when it comes to creating paper mache artworks is the frame molding phase. It is in this phase where you go to make the frame unto which you will paste your pulp recipe. Different people use different materials. Use what you think is most suitable for you. Among the materials usually used are balloons, cardboards, newspapers, wire frames, shoe boxes, and even tissue paper. This article from About.com even talks about other materials that you can use.
Personally, I usually use cardboxes. They are very much easy to form into a desired shape. Plus they also have good surfaces for your pulp recipe.
After having your material coated with the pulp, then it's time to paint! Feel free to paint your creation with as much colors as you want. You're in control. Here are some sample paper mache projects that you can try out at home with your kids.
