Using Fabrics in Scrapbooks

09/20/09 10:27

Any tailor will find that he/she has a lot of great material that can be used when decorating scrapbooks. This is because he/she is most likely to have stored yards upon yards of scrap fabric that will look so well when put in a scrapbook. You see, fabric materials add some depth, warmth, and interest in a scrapbook otherwise dominated by paper.

Quite fortunately, most kinds of fabrics are safe with scrapbook use, although you should stay away from wool because this kind of fabric attracts a lot of moths. You might also want to use pinking shears and fabric glue in order to achieve best results with your scrapbook decorations.

The best and most varied pieces of fabric can be found in your used clothes bin. Imagine the wealth of fabric there is! The nice thing about fabric is that,a side from the variety, they are versatile when it comes to the type of scrapbook layouts that you choose to put them on. The layout does not really matter.

Here are just some ideas that you can incorporate to your layout using some pieces of fabric:

  • Sewing to the pages of the scrapbook. I guess this is the most natural technique that you can use with your scrapbook pages. You can make pockets, page fillers, or just plain decorations at one corner of the page.
  • Use as borders. Tear the fabrics into strips and use it to cover the sides of your pages. You may also use them just to put along the sides, not necessarily covering the sides.
  • Use as paint holders. Use the fabrics to hold ink and paint unto the surface of your pages. You will find that there is a unique pattern left out by the weavings of the fabric.
