Walnut Christmas Balls, Anyone?

11/11/09 18:50

I do not know why, but for some reason, I suddenly thought of walnuts and the immense number craft ideas that you can make with them, particularly the walnut shells. Walnut shells are relatively constant in physical appearance, making them good materials for crafts that require many similar pieces.

Since we are also near the Christmas season already, then let's just do some Christmas ornaments using these walnuts. Think about it. How many times have we put ordinary colored Christmas balls in our Christmas trees? Why don't we somewhat change that this year and come out with walnut Christmas balls?

That's exactly the kind of Christmas craft explored in MarthaStewart.com . Basically, a Styrofoam ball is glued with multitudes of walnut shells (or maybe whole walnuts) to create something like a ball with many rounded spikes.

What the article suggested was to insert a 3 3/4-inch screw eye into an 8-inch styro ball, though of course you can always change this depending on your preferences. Then you have to use a gold floral spray to cover the entire ball. Make sure that you have some mat or pieces of newspaper underneath so that you do not damage your table.

Next, double-coat each of the walnuts with the gold floral spray as well, then glue this to the surface of the styro ball using a low-melt glue gun. Afterwards, put a ribbon and some greenery to make it genuinely look like a Christmas ball.

You can always change the color from gold to any color that you wish, though, and opt not to go with the prescribed here. In the website, you can also look at the video of how the craft is exactly made.

Hmm. Now I am wondering what next material we could work on. We have already made use of walnuts. Now do you have any suggestions?
