Inspiration Alley Interview

By Interviewer at 07/14/07 07:22
altered art Inspiration Alley Interview
Name of your website?

Inspiration Alley

Your name?

Terrie Knibb

Your Location (city, etc)

Birmingham

When did you start your website and why?

This is a newly established website that has only been running for 3 weeks. We started it because although there are a lot of scrapbook challenge websites about, most are quite prescriptive. We wanted to encourage people to think for themselves and develop their individuality. By showing how we get our inspiration and convert it into a finished product, we hope to inspire others to develop their imagination and creativity.

Please give us a short summary of your website, business model, etc

A site devoted to prompts, competitions, challenges and instructional classes for scrapbooking, altered art and photography.

What has been the most difficult part of creating and running your website?

Making people aware of its existence has been the hardest part of establishing the site.

What has been the easist part of operating your website?

We have lots of ideas, the difficulty has been finding sufficient time to create sufficient examples to place them on the site, so the establshment of all our plans has been somewhat slower than we would have liked.

What was your biggest mistake?

Our biggest mistake was having too many people involved at the start. This created conflicting ideas and we found it difficult to move forwards.

Who maintains your website and why?

The web site is maintained by the owner, simply because it is financially the only possible solution at present.

What are your views on ecommerce and the future of the internet?

I believe that in the future most of life will be undertaken via the internet. My son is already educated via a virtual school and I think that this will be the way forward.

What are your views on Search Engines? Have they helped or hindered your website?

Since it's a newly established site, it's only just starting to show up on search engines so I can't really answer.

What method has been most successful for promoting your website?

The most successful means of promoting our site has been by word of mouth, achieved by mentioning it in threads of forums of relevant interest groups.

It's World Art Interview

By Interviewer at 07/11/07 07:45
web interview It's World Art Interview
Name of your website?

It's World Art

Your name?

Irma Adams

Your Location (city, etc)

Bedford, Eastern Cape

When did you start your website and why?

I know how difficult it is to be an emerging artist – I’ve been there myself. Great talent only takes you so far, but it doesn't necessarily find you buyers. I have started the development of this website about 2 years ago, because I have a passion for artists that are very talented, but are struggling to make a living from their art. I want to make the marketing and selling of art a little easier for artists, so that they would spend more time creating artwork, and less time trying to sell what they create.

Please give us a short summary of your website, business model, etc

ItsWorldArt gives an opportunity for artists to manage and sell their art online - without the middle man. The artists on the site have their own website (and domain name), where they upload art, publish articles, advertise events and exhibitions, and manage their fans and mailing lists. ItsWorldArt also provides recourses to help them with their art business. ItsWorldArt don't take any commissions from sales, neither do the artist pay hosting, advertising or domain name fees. We only ask a small monthly subscription fee. Artist are also welcome to test the site by opening a free gallery where they can upload as many artworks they want - totally free.

What has been the most difficult part of creating and running your website?

I think the most difficult part was to create the software that allows the artists to have total control from the backend of their sites. Artists even have the ability to manage the Website optimization of their individual sites. We are currently working on a choice of “skins” where the artists can uniquely customise their own individual sites.

What has been the easist part of operating your website?

The easiest part of this business is the fact that I work with artists. I am one myself, and I totally understand the difficulties of trying to be a good productive artist combined with being an excellent sales person to promote myself. Most artists I know don't do both very well, and that is where the website will help them!

What was your biggest mistake?

My biggest mistake was not developing this website sooner. It would have saved me a lot of frustration and heartache!

Who maintains your website and why?

I am the webmaster of ItsWorldArt, and I deal with every enquiry myself. The reason for this is that ItsWorldArt is my passion, not just a business. I love to be able to help other artists!

Tell us how your business has benefitted from your website?

My business is my website.

What are your views on ecommerce and the future of the internet?

Ecommerce, when it is properly and safely utilized, could be an extremely useful tool. The fact is, more people are wising up to the benefits of the internet. You either utilize this, or loose out on a lot of potential business.

What are your views on Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

This is the most important part of having a successful website. Without Search Engine Optimization, visitors and potential art buyers won't find you on the internet.

What are your views on Search Engines? Have they helped or hindered your website?

Search Engines are the way millions of people browse the internet. It is best to use them to your benefit, it you wish to be successful. Most search engines give you a pretty detailed guideline on how to optimize your site for visitors to find you. If all else fails, read the instructions;)

What method has been most successful for promoting your website?

First of all, providing the best service possible to the Artists that are already on my website. I found that a good name and reputation goes a very long way!

What method has been least successful for promoting your website?

The least successful way for promoting my website was stepping into the same trap so many before me did. And that is by listening to the thousands of companies on the internet that will get your site "on google's first page". The trouble with many of them is that they don't always play by the rules, and could get your website banned from major search engines.

What would you like to see change with respect to the internet?

I would love search engines to give more content-related results when you look for something.

What is your website address?

It's World Art

Visual Metaphors - oil paintings by award winning artist Liron Sissman Interview

By Interviewer at 07/02/07 11:05
liron sissman Visual Metaphors - oil paintings by award winning artist Liron Sissman Interview
Name of your website?

Visual Metaphors - oil paintings by award winning artist Liron Sissman

Your name?

Liron Sissman

Your Location (city, etc)

Park Ridge, NJ

When did you start your website and why?

Back in 1999 with the goal of reaching a wider audience

Please give us a short summary of your website, business model, etc

My website displays my oil paintings and my biography including awards, collections, and previous and upcoming exhibitions. It also offers a way to contact me and arrange for a studio visit.

What has been the most difficult part of creating and running your website?

An occasional, undisclosed, system update on behalf of my webhosting company that prevented me from being able to update my site.

What has been the easist part of operating your website?

My website was created with a program called Homesite which I found easy to work with. Despite not knowing html I can still maintain it myself.

What was your biggest mistake?

For a while there were some people who couldn't view parts of my website and it took some time to figure out why. It turned out that some browsers are more restrictive than others. Eventually these glitches got worked out.

Who maintains your website and why?

I do. It's easy enought and I'm glad to not have to rely on anyone else for that matter.

Tell us how your business has benefitted from your website?

Much larger exposure. In fact last month I reached 18,000 hits. I get to collect email addresses of people who are interested in my work and keep them posted of my shows. It helps introduce my works to new galleries since it saves on the need to send slides and/or CDs in the mail. And, of course it facilitates sales both online and in person.

What are your views on ecommerce and the future of the internet?

I think over time more people are only going to get more comfortable with it.

What are your views on Search Engines? Have they helped or hindered your website?

They've helped. In fact I recently put a new website together and made sure I submitted it to the various search engines.

What method has been most successful for promoting your website?

Probably my recent usage of Google AdWards which brings 25 new flower and landscape painting searchers to my website every day.

What method has been least successful for promoting your website?

Buying a mailing list and sending postcards to people residing in a certain geographic area.

How is your artwork unique?

My work is personal yet universal. My flowers are not really about flowers. They have very little to do with the traditional composition of a bouquet in a vase. There are often two on a canvas and they 'speak' to each other. In fact, it's a whole life-cycle portrayed via flowers. At some level I think of them as portraits except unlike traditional portraits they represent an image that viewers of diverse backgrounds can relate to. Overcoming superficial dissimilarities, they serve as portraits of universal appeal.

My landscapes are about the journey. Their compositions are quite unusual for landscape paintings. I typically paint a body of water seen through a screen of trees. I use both water and trees symbolically. The water like in antiquity represents life. The trees may either represent a barrier or they may yield to define a path. Most often they partially obscure, connoting a hurdle as they provide a glimpse.
