Your name?

Michelle Nist

Your Location (city, etc)

Hartland, MI

When did you start your website and why?

I started my website over two years ago to reach customers that aren't local, or prefer to shop without leaving home. Scrapbooking is growing and I wanted to reach as many people as possible!

Please give us a short summary of your website, business model, etc

This website showcases the products I sell, from the company I work for. As an independent business owner, Close To My Heart makes it easy for me to maintain and keep my website current. I can offer different stamping techniques and ideas to my customers as well.

What has been the most difficult part of creating and running your website?

Coming up with creative ideas for the art boards and bulletin boards. Involving my customers and team within the site - I'd like to see more participation from others!

What has been the easist part of operating your website?

Maintaining the current offers and promotions - the company makes it easy to use!

Who maintains your website and why?

My company maintains the basic structure, but it is important for me to visit it often and update the photos, and posts, keeping it current for my audience. I want good return visits so I can TEACH rather than just sell.

Tell us how your business has benefitted from your website?

The customers can view the product before attending scrapbooking events, they can shop at home, and take advantage of website specials.

What are your views on ecommerce and the future of the internet?

I believe we will continue to see a rise in ecommerce! I think the internet is amazing and is just opening doors to making it a smaller world!

Digiscrap Boutique Interview

By Interviewer at 06/27/07 20:18
Delaware, any: I have learned Name of your website?

Digiscrap Boutique

Your name?

Veronica Spriggs

Your Location (city, etc)

Wilmington

When did you start your website and why?

Michelle Yiap and I started began planning to open a digital scrapbooking site of our own after a previous site I was selling at considered closing it's doors. Not knowing where to turn I thought it would be best to venture out on my own rather than look for a new home to sell my scrapkits.

Please give us a short summary of your website, business model, etc

Digiscrap Boutique is a Full Service Digital Scrapbooking Site. This means that we offer a fully stocked Boutique, featuring high quality designs from over 15 Designers. We also offer a gallery, chatroom and forum so that you always have resources for scrapbooking ideas. Help getting started or just a place to relax and enjoy your hobby.

What has been the most difficult part of creating and running your website?

Finding a good a home! A site as large as ours has to be hosted on a server that can handle the workload. We have just recently moved to a dedicated server and everything seems to be running smoothly. It's certainly a learning experience but everyday brings us closer to where we want to be!

What has been the easist part of operating your website?

lol hmmm. I have to think about that one! I'm going to have to say just logging in and browsing and gallery. Technically not required to run the site but boy it sure makes it all worthwhile. I could gaze at all the beauty in the gallery for hours.

What was your biggest mistake?

Choosing my very first server without enough experience to know the questions to ask. I would suggest to anyone starting a website do some thoruough research (if you can find it). Ask people in your field to recommend a good host. Don't let price be your determining factor. Find out if they can handle all the functions you will need.

Who maintains your website and why?

Myself and my partner. Primarily because we are both so picky. We like things done a particular way and in a timely fashion. Sometimes you can't always have both when you rely on others.

Tell us how your business has benefitted from your website?

I will have to say now that i have my own website I am in more control of my product. When I can have sales, how quickly my new product is submitted and how it is promoted. Having my own website does actually help to increase my productivity as well. I feel like i need to keep my designers motivated. I think if they see me being active and productive they will want to do the same.

What are your views on ecommerce and the future of the internet?

I have found myself purchasing more from the internet simply because it is rare to find a traditional store that can beat the prices i find on the net. Ecommerce has been growing and will certainly continue to grow. You need only log into Ebay to see that. I have noticed now a trend of "ebay like" sites popping up all around us. That has to be for a reason.

What are your views on Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

It's imperative. If you aren't visible you will suffer. I am constantly struggling to reach the top ranks of my keywords. It's such a time consuming chore to build your ranks.

What are your views on Search Engines? Have they helped or hindered your website?

I don't see how anyone can say a search engine has hindered their website. On any given day over 50% of my traffic is search engine driven. So yes, it certainly is a BIG help.

What method has been most successful for promoting your website?

I try to advertise on related websites, forums, and email groups. I also try to achieve high ranks on my keywords. I find that the email groups, and forums do well but usually drive traffic the day i post. The search engines bring traffic every day so that would have to be the most successful.

What method has been least successful for promoting your website?

hmmm, I would have to say joining a link trade site once. I never got requests for sites related to mine so it was pretty much a waste of time.

What would you like to see change with respect to the internet?

Less spam. Less Pop Ups.

How did you become interested in Digital Scrapbooking?

I have been creating computer generated graphics for almost 8 years. I have followed the trends in creating PSP Tags. That eventually led to me digital scrapbooking. The trend started to add scrapbooking elements to your tags. This led me on searches for digital scrapbooking supplies to create tags with. I then decided i should be able to create my own scrapbooking items. and that was all it took. I began by creating practice kits which i offered for free. Friends encouraged me to begin selling my designs. Though it much convincing i finally got there. I believe i was rejected from 2 digital scrap sites before being accepted to one. And less than 6 months later I had my own site.

Teapots to Talk About Interview

By Interviewer at 06/25/07 15:09
hand painted Teapots to Talk About Interview
Name of your website?

Teapots to Talk About

Your name?

Cheryl Smith

Your Location (city, etc)

Etchingham, East Sussex

When did you start your website and why?

The Teapots to Talk About website was launched in September 2006 when I started my company hand painting teapots. I wanted a business that I could operate from home, that would allow me to be creative and one day the idea of painting teapots just popped into my head as the solution.

Please give us a short summary of your website, business model, etc

The Teapots to Talk About website allows customers to choose wording, decoration and a colour scheme in order to have a teapot personalised to their design, creating a unique and special gift. The website also has a gallery of all the teapots that have been sold, a small number of hand painted teapots for sale together with suggestions for quotes and wording that can be used. Teapots can be ordered and paid for through the website and delivered within 3 weeks.

What has been the most difficult part of creating and running your website?

Creating my own website has been a steep learning curve for me. I began knowing nothing with a single holding page and have gradually developed the site as I have worked out how to do more with it. Trying to get the site picked up by search engines and achieving page ranking seems to be the biggest challenge to overcome.

What has been the easist part of operating your website?

Using a host that provided a web building package has meant that I have been able to create a reasonable looking site with next to no knowledge.

What was your biggest mistake?

My biggest mistake was asking someone for help as a favour who promised the world and delivered nothing. If you want a job doing... do it yourself or pay someone!!

Who maintains your website and why?

I maintain my own website and update it most weeks as I complete new work. I cannot afford to pay someone else to do it and it also means that I maintain control and understand how it works.

Tell us how your business has benefitted from your website?

I always intended my business to operate as a web based business and now that I am getting picked up by search engines that dream stands a chance of becoming reality. I now get a steady trickle of orders through the site which I hope will grow as I optimise it further.

What are your views on ecommerce and the future of the internet?

I think the internet has already had a huge impact on the way we live our lives and will continue to do so.

What are your views on Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

It's a lot of hard work for a single mum running her own business and unless you know what you are doing good advice and support is essential. It does make you evaluate your site carefully in terms of what search engines want but without it it would be impossible to run a web based business.

What are your views on Search Engines? Have they helped or hindered your website?

Now that I have optimised my site, search engines are bringing people to it. With so much on the internet there has to be some way of sorting through it all and search engines seem to do a pretty good job on the whole. You have to understand what they look for in order to make them work for you.

What method has been most successful for promoting your website?

Optimising the site so it is picked up by search engines.

What method has been least successful for promoting your website?

Free publicity as I'm not very good and going out and seeking it!!

What would you like to see change with respect to the internet?

Less advertising - which I appreciate is what makes it pay for most people! An equal playing field for big and small companies alike.

Who has helped you most in the development of your website?

I have had brilliant free advice from a number of organisations but ebiz in Hastings, U.K. has helped me get my site to where it is. Without their help and support I would still have little idea of what I needed to do to get it picked up by the search engines.
